We've been looking after these huts for over 20 years, so we've heard most questions before. Here are the common ones — if yours isn't here, email huts@southernlakesnzda.org.nz.
How far ahead should I book?
The huts get busy over summer, so book in advance if you can — Upper Caples fills first. Mid-week and out of summer, you can often book closer to the date.
What's in the huts?
Bunks with mattresses, gas cookers, a wood burner, cookware and crockery, a meat safe. Bring food and a sleeping bag and you've got most of what you need. See each hut's page for the full list.
Can I collect the keys a few days early?
Yes — plenty of people walk the Routeburn first, so several keys are cut. If you're collecting more than a week ahead, mention it in the booking comments so we can keep track.
I took the keys home by mistake — what now?
It happens. Email huts@southernlakesnzda.org.nz, then post the keys to PO Box 1648, Queenstown 9348, with your NZ bank details for the deposit refund. Overseas accounts cop the transaction fee on the refund.
Will there be hunters in the hut at the same time as me?
April to September is the main hunting season. April and May can have hikers, fishers and hunters all at once. The huts are big enough — if you'd like an idea of who else has booked, ask in the booking comments.
When is the fishing season?
Fly-fishing only, 1 November to 31 May. You need a fishing licence and a backcountry licence; in February and March a ballot permit is also required. Otago Fish & Game has the detail.
Is there cell coverage?
No, none in the valley. Download maps and what you need before you leave Queenstown. The Mid Greenstone Hut has paid WiFi if you really need it.
Do I need to be a member to stay?
No. Anyone can book. Local active branch members stay free; other NZDA members pay $10 per person per night; non-members pay $30 per person per night. Plus the $50 refundable key deposit.
What about dogs?
Not in the huts. Sorry — they're a clearance issue for other guests and for our cleaning routine.
